The Lady Who Ran Away With A Cabbage is Alex Crumbie’s second work, published by Team Trident Press. It is a short story, written in verse about a Lady and a Cabbage who fall in love. However, they can not simply love one another as they’d wish because of the disapproving views of the society in which they live….
In almost all parts of the world people are demonised for simply loving who they wish to love. This story, written for all ages, uses a surreal setting and gentle humour to draw attention to this issue and illustrate the harm of a society that does not accept those who are different from the majority.
The book was released to spectacular reviews:
‘A masterpiece. By far the best brassica-based artwork of the 21st Century.’ (The Grauniad)
‘A tragic, against-the-odds love story that is probably even better than Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.’ (The Torygraph)
The book is A6 size and has 16 pages, with 6 illustrations. It is handmade and printed on recycled paper using vegetable-oil based inks using Riso printing, the most ecological printing style around.
As the printing is done using a Riso printer, the most ecological form of printing around, colours are printed layer-on-layer, which in some cases can mean some misalignment. I prefer to see such misalignment not as a mistake, but as a quirky stylistic feature. Hopefully you will too.
About my books
My books are written for children, adults, and everyone in between. I believe that the best art and story-telling should have something for everyone, so I aim to incorporate important philosophical ideas and concepts into easily understood tales.
More about Riso printing…
The soya ink print process uses digital machines called Risographs. This process avoids all the worst aspects of the printing procedure. The ink is soya-based and contains none of the solvents that cause volatile organic emissions. There is no waste ink, no fixers, no wash downs, no disposable aluminium plates. The Risograph printer uses very little energy as there is no heat involved – it is a wet ink process. (This description is taken from MARC the Printers, a members-owned printing social enterprise in Manchester).
